Clinical finals may not be reflective of work as a PRHO, but they are the stepping-stone to making this job possible. A few basic rules make the process more approachable.
Six Months to go..
You still have a long time until the exam. The big day may seem close, especially as everyone else is getting carried away. Don't get sucked in. Stay calm and pace yourself for the months ahead.
Don't be disturbed by your colleagues' knowledge. S/he probably has a different revision plan - you will catch up by one month to go.
Sit down and identify your weaknesses. Review these each month until finals.
Remember it's easy to revise the subjects you like or are good at. Others are less fun, but they won't go away and are just as likely to appear on the exam.
One month to go..
Identify exam favourites that you've missed and set about finding a suitable patient to see.
Avoid the 'Signs Army' that trounce around the big teaching hospitals in a frenzy to see everything. See a few, understand and be courteous to the person behind the sign.
It's crucial to have ‘protected time' whatever you do with it.
The day itself..
Try and keep your nerve. Once you get going it's not as bad as you think and it will be over in a flash.
Don't allow the examiners' style, demeanour or non-verbal expressions put you off.
If you are asked to do something do only that. If you don't understand the request or question, ask politely for it to be rephrased.
Appear interested and remember they want you to pass finals too!
